Dr. McCandless graduated from Brigham Young University (BYU). While attending BYU, he was involved in service organizations and had the opportunity to participate in a Volunteer Optometric Service to Humanity (VOSH) project to Mexico. He was able to help examine and distribute more than 15,000 pair of glasses to those in need. That singular event was very influential as it revealed the importance of proper vision care in order for people to perform simple daily tasks as well as enjoy their surrounding environment.

While attending The Ohio State, he excelled as he completed the Doctor of Optometry program. He graduated Beta Sigma Kappa, Cum Laude, and with OSU honors. His passion for community service continued as he was awarded the college’s Community Outreach Award. His training included a wide variety of rotational experiences involving primary care, treatment and management of optical diseases, and ocular surgery management that prepared him to provide exceptional care to all patients.

Since graduating and joining The Wellish Vision Institute, Dr. McCandless has continued to learn, grow and become a leader in his field. He is one of only a few optometrists in Nevada who have completed the demanding requirements to become a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry (F.A.A.O.). He has given presentations on treatments of ocular conditions to both national and international audiences. He is also one of a select few of optometrists that have fulfilled the requirements to become glaucoma certified. He acts as the Director of Refractive Surgery for The Wellish Vision Institute. His knowledge, clinical experience, and compassion allow him to help individuals reduce their dependency on glasses and contact lenses.

Dr. McCandless moved to Las Vegas with his wife in 2006. Since then, he has a been a valuable member with The Wellish Vision Institute . He enjoys playing racquetball, canyoneering, mountain biking and spending time outdoors with his 3 sons.
