He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the Loma Linda University Medical Center in 1992, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Mattheis has a background in public health, biostatistics and epidemiology, and he practices medicine with individual attention while maintaining a broad perspective. His academic honors include being chosen Alpha Omega Alpha in medical school and being honored by Delta Omega, the national public health honor society. He was selected as the Lange Medical Publication Student Award recipient for excellent performance in medical school and also received the Merck Award in medical school.
