Dr. Kostanyan was born in Armenia.  He graduated from Yerevan State Medical University with honors at age 21. He completed ophthalmology residency at Malayan Eye Center in Yerevan. While in residency Dr. Kostanyan worked at Armenian Eye Care Project, a nonprofit organization providing medical and surgical eye care in underserved areas of the country. After moving to United States he joined Ophthalmic Imaging Research Laboratory and worked with world-renowned glaucoma specialist and one of the inventors of optical coherence tomography Dr. Joel Schuman. Dr. Kostanyan has since completed his second ophthalmology residency and prestigious glaucoma and anterior segment fellowship at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Dr. Kostanyan specializes in cataract and medical, laser and surgical treatments of glaucoma. Having in his armamentarium both traditional and newer microincisional glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) he is able to personalize a surgical approach for a patient. Thanks to his well-rounded training in comprehensive ophthalmology, Dr. Kostanyan also provides quality care to patients with a variety of other ocular conditions, including those due to diabetes, macular degeneration, optic nerve and/or visual field disorders, and inflammatory conditions of the eye, including dry eye. Dr. Kostanyan has numerous peer-reviewed publications and presented his work in local and national meetings.

Dr. Kostanyan has lived in various parts of the country including California, New York, New Mexico and Pittsburgh. He is fluent in Armenian, Russian and plans on refreshing his French and learning Spanish. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, traveling, playing table tennis and pool, watching stand-up comedy and movies.
