Intacs are corneal implants that are used to treat keratoconus for our Las Vegas patients for whom Corneal Cross-Linking is not an option due to the level of severity. Intacs corneal implant rings flatten the shape of the cornea, correcting the steep cornea of nearsighted patients or reducing the bulge associated with keratoconus. Las Vegas Ophthalmologist Dr. Kent Wellish simply inserts these tiny crescent-shaped pieces of plastic polymer into the cornea in a procedure that usually only takes about 15 to 20 minutes!
Here at Wellish Vision Institute, our surgeons place small sterile plastic rings under the surface of the cornea, reshaping the curvature of the cornea, which ultimately gives it a more natural shape. Due to the onset and progression of Keratoconus, the weakened cornea looses its natural dome-like shape. As a result, the light rays entering the eye are no longer focused properly, impairing one’s ability to see images clearly.
Intacs® are specially designed inserts, made of medical plastic, which are surgically placed under the surface of the cornea. Due to their unique custom design, Intacs® are able to remodel the architecture of the cornea re-establishing a more natural dome-like shape and improving one’s vision. Our laser eye surgeons here at Wellish Vision Institute take specific measurements for each procedure and ensure the patient is as comfortable as possible.
